Speakers’ room

Speakers’ room (Meeting Room 1) is located on the second floor, please follow the signs. Laptops are available for speakers to check their presentations from Monday to Wednesday during the conference hours.


Please upload your presentation to the computer in the corresponding conference hall of your presentation. Take care that this takes place no later than during the previous break before your presentation. Assistance is available in each conference hall during the whole conference.


Complimentary wlan is available in Marina Congress Center: scandic_easy (no password needed).

First aid

First aid assistance is available at the Conference venue during the official conference dates. It is located on the first floor.

Luggage room at the conference venue

There is a luggage room available during the conference days (Mon-Wed) at the Scandic Grand Marina hotel, opposite the conference venue.

ICN silent auction

All attendees are welcom to bring along items from their country to donate to the silent auction fundraiser. All attendees may “bid” on the donated international items and this money will be used for grants to APN colleagues from developing countries to attend future APNN conferences.

The auction table is located on the first floor of the venue. The auction takes place from Monday morning to Tuesday evening. Kindly note that payment is by cash only. See more.

Event documents & Name badges

Name badges must be worn at all times during the conference, including social programme. Name badges will be checked for admission to all events.

The List of participants has been sent electronically to all conference participants prior to the Conference.

All scientific papers (abstracts) that have been accepted to the APNN2014 Conference are published in the Abstract book (in electronic format only).

Please note: Due to ecological reasons there is no printed version of the abstract book available nor included in the participants’ conference material. The link to the Abstract book will be sent to the participants prior to the conference.The electronic abstract book is available only for registered conference participants.

Transportation in Helsinki

Taxis are reliable and easy to find in the city centre except during the busiest periods. Taxi stands are conveniently located throughout the centre.

Getting around in Helsinki is easy and safe with a functioning public transportation such as tram, busses and metro. With a single ticket you can hop aboard for one hour trams, busses, the metro and even the ferry to the fortress island of Suomenlinna. Single tickets can be purchased from the driver or from ticket machines. Day tickets are available for unlimited use on public transportation for 1-7 days. They can be purchased from ticket machines, from the Tourist Information (Pohjoisesplanadi 19) or from the Helsinki City Transport service point in the Central Railway Station.

Tipping is neither necessary nor expected in Finland. However if the service has been exceptional it is nice to leave a tip as a thank you.

Drinking water

Tap water in Finland is fresh and clean and therefore a joy to drink.

Please take good care of your personal property. The organisers, APNN and staff at the venues are not responsible for any loss or damage to personal property.


The conference organisers cannot accept liability for personal injuries sustained, for loss of, or damage to property belonging to conference participants (or their accompanying persons), either during or as a result of the conference. Please check the validity of your own travel insurance.


The conference organisation and the local conference organiser (Confedent International Ltd) act as agents only in securing hotels, transport and travel services and shall in no event be liable for acts or omissions in the event of injury, damage, loss, accident, delay of irregularity of any kind whatsoever during arrangements organised through contractors or the employees of such contractors in carrying out services. Hotel, tour and transportation services are subject to the terms and conditions under which they are offered to the public in general. The conference organisation and the conference organiser reserve the right to make changes where deemed necessary without prior notice to parties concerned. All disputes are subject to Finnish Law.


Please refer to the programme for details of the times and locations of all conference sessions. Staff will be on hand to guide you as necessary. The conference programme will be available in your conference bag and also on the conference website.

Any last minutes changes in the programme or ‘Late News’ will be indicated on the information board.

The size of the conference rooms vary and seats in conference rooms will be taken on first come - first served basis. Please be in the conference in time, to ensure a seat in the session you would like to attend.

During the lunch and refreshments breaks, the catering services are found in both floors of the venue. If you have requested a special diet, please identify yourself to a member of the catering staff.

There is an exhibition running alongside of this event. The exhibition stands are found on the first floor of the venue. Please take time to visit the stands during the conference breaks (see the programme).

Poster sessions

The poster area takes place on the second floor of the venue. The posters are changed daily. The set-up of posters is at 8:00-9:00 on each conference day and they should be removed at 17:00. Please take time to visit the extensive poster exhibition every day. See the poster programme.

The authors are encouraged to be available by their posters during the viewing times (see the programme).

The poster presenters are responsible for printing and bringing their posters to the conference site and also for displaying and taking the poster down at the end of the day. Please, check the correct board number for your poster presentation at registration upon arrival. Thumbtacks/pins are provided on site.

Vote daily the best poster of the day and you might win a prize! The daily rewards will go to the authors of the best poster and raffled voter of the day. The results will be announced in social media and on general information board at main lobby. The prizes can be picked up from the Finnish Nurses Association’s stand at the exhibition area.


The workshops take place at the Scandic Hotel Grand Marina (opposite to the venue), room Eliel Selim. Staff will be available to guide you if necessary.

ICN INP/APN Network Meeting on Tuesday 19 August at 16:00-17:00, Room Europaea

The ICN INP/APN Network Meeting will invite attendees from the conference to join the members of the Core Steering Group (CSG) and Sub-Groups (SGs) to review the work carried out by the network over the last two years. The chair of the Network will provide a summary of the key initiatives undertaken by the Network since the last network conference (2012) and the chairs of the Sub-Groups will provide reports on the projects that they have recently undertaken or are currently undertaking.

There will be the opportunity for participants to engage in questions relating to the work of the network and to find out how you can become more actively involved in one of our Sub-Groups. An interactive tour of the ICN Network web-site will demonstrate the work of the network and how it is disseminated to the members.

ICN INP/APNN Core Steering Group Meeting

The meeting takes place on Tuesday 19 August at 8:00-8:45 in the Marine room, on the second floor of the venue. Breakfast is served during the meeting. The meeting is for the members of the Core Steering Group only.

International Continuing Nursing Education Credits (ICNECs)

This continuing education activity has been approved by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) for the award of International Continuing Nursing Education Credits (ICNECs). They will be applicable for all keynote presentations, oral sessions, and workshops. Each one hour session is worth one ICNEC.

The ‘Evaluation and attendance verification forms’ are available at the registration and information desk. If you want to earn International Continuing Nursing Education Credits, you need to fill in a form and return it to the box at the registration and information desk. After the conference you will be sent a formal approval letter by ICN. Be sure to fill in the form carefully to include all the required information.

As the ICN ICNEC system is designed to assure the quality of the event, provide evidence of attendance and the successful achievement of learning objectives, ICNECs constitute evidence of continuing professional development. They may be used as part of the professional profile or portfolio required as proof of the nurse’s continued competency and required for:

  • Re-licensure
  • Career advancement
  • Evidence in salary reviews

A conference certificate of attendance will be provided to all participants with their conference material.

Welcome reception

The Reception takes place at the City Hall, address Pohjoisesplanadi 11–13, on Monday 18 August at 18:00-19:30. It takes only a couple of minutes to walk to the City Hall from the conference venue. Meet us at the front door of Marina Congress Center at 17:40 to walk together.

You will find an invitation card in your registration envelope if you have registered to the reception.

Conference dinner

Conference dinner takes place on Tuesday 19.8. at restaurant Kalastajatorppa. Bus transportation leaves from Marina Congress Center at 17:45 and it includes also a Helsinki sightseeing.

Study visits take place on Thursday 21 August. The buses leave from the conference venue at 9:15 and return approximately at 12:45. You will find an invitation card in your registration envelope if you have registered to a study visit. You can still ask for available tickets at the registration and information desk.

Site visits to Arabia factory outlet

Site visits to the Arabia factory and the factory shop take place on Monday 18 August and Tuesday 19 August. It takes about 30 minutes and after that the participants have the possibility of shopping at the factory shop with reduced prices. The address is Hämeentie 135, 00560 Helsinki (Arabianranta).

The tours are free of charge but pre-registration is needed. You only need to pay for your travelling by public transportation (one-hourticket 3€ for an adult). Meet the group at 16:45 at the front doors of Marina Congress Center to travel together. The tour starts at the factory at 17:15 and the factory shop closes at 20:00.

Excursions to the Finnish nature

The unique Nuuksio National Park is situated only 40 minutes from Helsinki. They offer you different possibilities to visit the forests and lakes, fresh and pacifying nature of the national park as follows:

Berry picking and mushroom hunting trip on Monday 18 August or Tuesday 19 August

The minibus will come to Marina Congress Center at 17:00 to pick you up and will take you back at around 21:30. Be sure to take with you good shoes and outdoor clothing depending on the weather.

Hans Välimäki (restaurant Rikhards) is a Finnish chef, who has been honoured with two Michelin stars with his former restaurant. Välimäki is the chief judge of the culinary show Top Chef Finland. Stefan Richter (Stefan´s Steakhouse) is a chef from Finland, who has resided for many years in Santa Monica, California. He was a runner-up in the season 5 and also competed in season 10 of Top Chef USA.

Climate in Helsinki in August

Most likely the weather will be warm, the temperature in mid-August is usually around +20 C during the day time. Evenings may be slightly cooler and occasional rain showers are possible.

Due to effective air conditioning, the venue might be cold. Be sure to bring socks and other clothing to keep you warm!
